The hydrating crystals work beautifully, especially when you are doing a long distance air layer (down the road or off the road). Be sure to fully rehydrate the mix before you use it, that stuff is pretty amazing in its ability to swell.

I keep adding chopped sphagnam moss until it is about a 75:25 sphagnam:crystal mix. It is impossible to clean it all off when you harvest the layered plant. You have to live with some slime near the trunk for at least a year.

Try it, you'll like it.
