Ian, This is a long shot but, is there a stamp or mark on the underside from the person or company that made your stand? Maybe they can be contacted. If not, most rubbed wax finishes will show fingerprints easily, or show a smudge if scratched with your fingernail. If it is a varnish or epoxy type finish and you have to sand, start with stealwool. If stealwool doesn't do it I would use a 200 grit sandpaper or finer. You may not need to take it down much if your goal is to make the blemish blend in. It is hard to tell in the photo but, your finish looks like a satin or flat finish, that needs to be matched with any finish you use. You could try to find a scrap piece of wood to sand and finish to see how it matches. If it looks good try it on a small hidden spot on your stand first. Good luck, and remember if it gets ugly you can always sand it down and start fresh, a good little project for a stand that is well worth it. Jim
