Again, as though I am speaking in the wind here, you have to determine what kind of finish is on the stand. If it is a Catalyzed lacquer finish almost anything you do will make it worse. If it looks like it has been hand rubbed with no obvious fine, with the grain streaks, like you get with steel wool but yet is is a satin or mat finish it is a Cat lacquer. If you fool around with this stuff without knowing what you are doing you will make a mess of it.
