Mr. Ian,
After many years of working with wood I still do not consider myself to be an expert, so I probably shouldn't answer this, but will share some information with you that has worked well for me...I am particularly fond of several products marketed by the 'Formby's' Company, available at most Home Depot, Lowe's, and other stores that have wood finishes...The "Formby's Furniture Refinisher' with OOOO steel wool, will remove and repair most scratches and dings that have not damaged the wood...The product basically works by 'liquefying' the old finish and redistributing it...It works well on most all clear finish products, and I have not found any finishes in my years of experience that the product had an adverse effect on...
Any good paste wax will be effective in polishing the wood...My personal favorite paste wax is made by 'Turtle', the same company that has specialized in wax for automobiles for many years, however it is not real easy to locate a source for me at least...The 'Formby's Lemon Oil' is another good choice for maintaining the finish and also helping to avoid cracking from drying out in a 'home environment'...I use it not only on the highly finished surfaces but also on the 'undersides' of my tables where the finish is not as heavy and more of the lemon oil can be absorbed by the wood...
I too will await Mr. Al's response to this question...One never get too old to learn newer, better ways of accomplishing things...
Regards
Behr
