Give them as close to an environment they would have if they were outdoors. Sunshine being key then, specific care for the individual species....etc.
Since you are in Alabama, I would keep them outdoors barring any frost or freak snowstorms.
The ivy, I would clip that sucker back alot. A friend of mine has one, and in its early development, just clipped it back to the first two sets every couple weeks. The growth, and trunk was splendid. He did have it in a regular nursery pot for the interim while growing it out.
