I see no reason why you couldn't use regular pliars to strip the bark and remove larger wood fibres. However, is it possible to use a cigarette lighter rather than a blowtorch to burn off the tiny fibrous bits on the new jin? Perhaps as the flame is cooler it is more likely to scorch/ blacken the jin?
