Adding Shape?

I have a question. I have seen in some books, some people use this, and sometimes i never hear mention of it, so I come to the council... In some books they say to take a saw and cut below the branch you want to bend to give it that extra fexibility... I am not sure who all has used this, but I was curious if it would also be effective with bending of trunks. I saw this great beuford cyrpess, that the base has some great shape, or at least I think so, but the rest is pretty straight. the main problem is, its about an inch plus thick, and hard to bend. Does anyone feel this would cause extreme trauma to the tree, or does anyone have a problem with this kind of shaping? I am probably going to try it, so more of a technicues and tips is what I am going to need, but I also want some info on if it can be done succesful, and if anyone else has really done it. Thanks.
