Planted in the ground will give the greatest chance at growth. I have a 150# mastiff who doesn't appreciate plants as much as I would like. I stake chicken wire fencing around my inground trees to prevent damage until they are large enough to survive on their own. A large pot will allow for more rapid growth then a bonsai pot, but will probably not produce the results of a tree grown in the ground.
