Bald Shohin
It took a lot of guts to post this thing. I started with a pencil size tree from Minature Plant Kingdom. I planted it in a five gallon can, in a 50/50 mix of sand and steer manure. I let that go for one year. It reached about 1" in diameter. Last year I put the whole thing in my koi pond. It reached the size you see now. This last spring I took it out of the five gallon, cut the roots and rammed it into the dish that the trident maple I bough came in. That was is Feb. 2002. I cut the trunk down to 10" tall.
I jinned the top and carved it up a bit. I decided that I wanted to have a live top though, and in June bent up the new leader. I trimmed the bottom tier of branches and pruned off the top branches. I wanted the bottom branches to have a half year head start to get the proportion right. In good design the upper branches should be smaller proportionally.
