My daughter has a small "Pipecleaner Bonsai" forest on her toy train table now!
With respect to the necessary materials, it really depends on whether or not you fill the core of the 'trunk' and 'major branches' with something. If you don't, and use only pipecleaners it will take quite a few to create any girth or taper. In that case I wouldn't be surprised to see as many as 100 pipecleaners needed for a smallish (8") tree - but it depends on what kind of taper you produce, how ramified the tree is, and whether you intend to include any kind of foliage.
Good luck!
Matt
