Once you've made early decisions with larch, you seem to be more or less stuck with them.

I have a tall thin-ish one that will probably end up as some sort of far view sparse upright if indeed I pursue it all.

Also a slanting one where I was a bit wiser and it has a bit more shape to it and developing quite well currently.

These are old pictures .

The one on the right has never produced a single bud in the areas lined in red over 4-5 years despite hard pruning the branches back every winter. This has left gaps in the tree. There's plenty of healed scars though where I pruned off what I thought to be unwanted branches.

I learned one thing though, selection/position of final branches is one of the last tasks - not the first!
