If you are using PSP (paint shop pro) You can clone from one photo to another without actually merging them together. Just open two files, arrange your windows so they are tiled horizontally or vertically, Select the clone/rubberstamp tool, and mark your origin (right click in PSP; and probably alt-click or option-click for mac in photoshop) then start cloning right into the other window.
Here's another trick - paint or clone on a different image layer. Then you can erase the foliage or newly added branches without affecting the trunk underneath.
OOps I forgot to answer Leesa's question. The color depth thing is easy. Usually you don't have to worry about it, but in order to copy from one image, just make sure they are both JPEG images and you should be okay. GIFs have a maximum of 256 colors. so if you tried to clone from a JPEG which has a lot more, to a GIF it would complain. If you do want to borrow from a GIF anyway, just convert by going to Colors->Increase Color Depth->16 million colors (24 bit) and you should be okay.
Regards,
Matt
