Ceberon, clip and grow IS used on some trees as the only form of training. I remember reading that Bonsaial1 uses it on his elms. It is very useful as a training method on types of trees that will snap as easily as look at you. On those, wire is not possible.

You do create ramification with clip and grow, and you can surely remove crossing branches. In addition, by clipping in the proper places you will determine the direction of the new growth! If I am correct the Chinese are more likely to use clip and grow than the Japanese. But on this last point I am not sure. Hopefully, someone with that knowledge will come forward.
