The 'Let a tree be a tree' part of this thread was very interesting. It explanes why many of my collected pines don't start new top growth untill late summer the first year after collection. BTW I do the same as you in this regard. I allways leave more (as much as possible) foliage than I will use on newly collected trees.
(One pine I collected last august is just now starting to enlogate this years candles, june 29)
This also explanes the reasons for starting fertilizing before there is any new top growth. The roots are probably active and can take up the nutrients even if there is no top growth.
