You live in Florida which is good for D Roses. I returned from a trip to Vietnam where D Rose bonsai is popular. They say that heat and humidity are good for them. They also told me that they allow the branches to grow long for a while (two years) and then trim them back hard. Cover the wound with something (they just use tape) to keep water from rotting the wound. The roots should swell up with time... yes time. Like every bonsai it takes time. I think they told me they raise the plant to expose the roots every three years. They use dog or cow poop as fertilizer. When they have an exposed root system they like then they work on the branches. Wiring and triming keeps then looking natural.
