Believe it or not, this species is mentioned in Dorothy Young's "Bonsai--The Art and Technique" as a native species that adapts very well (and has been used in Hawaii for some time) to bonsai culture. Young's book is one of the best in listing native U.S. species that work for bonsai.

Yes it's well known here for bonsai but as far as adapting well for bonsai culture, far from it. It's very difficult and most give up on it, hence the reason for ground-layering, still, it's a struggle, but I live so close to them, and I have to do something!
