During the boring parts of the Indy 500 I was able to prune and defoliate for shape on the trident stumps. Most of these have been pruned back hard on the new leaders that had grown from the spring push. Most of these leaders had grown to the size of a pencil in 6 weeks. pruning them back hard now will help to preserve the shape I am looking for.
One tree was wired due to the size of the branches, and one tree was pruned back to mostly two leaders for a twin trunk maple. I have always thought about the posibilities of having a real nice twin trunk shohin sized trident maple. This is something I have not seen in very many exhibits and hope to produce a good one. These two leaders will have to grow for most of the season to help build the trunk and stretch out the trunk to a suitable taper. I have no doubt that this can be done in one season.
All three of these trees has a 3 inch trunk across at the soil line and is less than 5 inches tall.
