Zelkova are closely related to elms and are just as vigorous. The zelkova name is often used in bonsai imporation to skirt heavier regulations placed on Chinese elm. That means sometimes Chinese elm is identified as Zelkova of some wierd sort.

However, if the tree is a landscape specimen, it most likely is a zelkova, as they are cultivated as replacements for elm species.

There are, apparently a couple of cultivars used in bonsai. One has new shoots that are red the other has green. The red-shooted cultivar is a bit better at being bonsaied from what my nursery friends tell me. The green isn't bad, but the red is better....
