Sound Off I Need Emergency Advise!

I live in Souther California and my co-woker got as a gift form a family member a hawaiian umbrella bonsai tree. I've always been interested in them but afaid that maybe i might not have a green thumb to take care of one. So when i say his my exicitement grew. Well he placed it under a lap near a window, which to me was not a good idea, but i did not say anything for it was not mine. Well to make a long story short, the poor thing started to loose it's beautiful green leaves and the tips of it's branches turned black.
He's only had the three for two months and just yesterday he was ready to throw it out when i stopped him. I really hate to think that there's no more hope fo the little guy so i asked him to let me give it try. It was dry like i expected so i watered it. I cleaned it up and it looks like it might make it, It's just missing something.
I read somewhere that it might be a good idea to repot it is that true? Some say to give some type of plant food, but i'm really not to sure.
What we need is an emergency act, but what? Should i take it home and set it outside, i'm afraid that the office might not be the place for this little guy. Please Help I don't want this baby to die on me.
