Aphids are a symptom of a larger problem. These are opportunistic pests. They attack weaker plants. Despite the "dirt" smell of the roots, I still suspect you have a root problem. Your soil sounds like part of the problem, that and too much watering. Indoor plants don't use as much water as outdoor plants, as the light and air circulation is much lower inside.
