Not really. Separate the layer only when you have sufficient roots to sustain it. If it's six months, it's six months. If it's a year and a half, it's a year and a half.

If you are using a clear poly bag, the roots by this time will have packed the bag to the gills, and they will have darkened in color. There is more info in the ***FAQ*** under propagation. Separating the layer after leaf drop will be less stressful.
