I think the method is pretty much the same regardless of the 'size' of the branch. It is easier to do on smaller branches, but sometimes if the size is real small, it is easier to just remove the branch and try to do a cutting. Cuttings are more iffy but do require less effort. Also if either does not work you could find a small seedling locally.
