This is just my superficial impression of the last couple of years, without a systematical scrutiny of the content, but I've never had the impression that the quality of content declined at all.
In fact, the language of the translated material has gotten better. I remember reading those japanese-authored articles a while ago, and struggling to figure out what is the text (accompanying some pictures) trying to say. Wayne is doing a great job, in my opinion.
Catalog and book business is an important piece of the puzzle. How would we expect otherwise that the money necessary for a quality content will come?
Every quality magazine that I've seen lately (including the Japanese ones) put a large emphasis on advertising and other commercial ventures/partnerships. It's part of the business of staying alive. Nobody will forward the money out of love.
