Pot Selection

I beleive one of my bougies will be ready for a bonsai container soon. I don't have a picture, but I asked Santa for a digital camera this Christmas, so maybe then. Anyway, I have already begun searching for a suitable pot, even though I won't be putting it into this pot until next Spring. This is the first experience I have had in choosing a pot. In my brief search so far, I have noticied that bright colors are rare in bonsai pots. Is there a reason for this? I think the Bougainvillea would look great in a gold or yellow round or oval pot. Most of what I have seen, that I even remotely like is cream in color. Further, before I make a wrong selection, and break some convention I am unaware of, is there any rule in choosing a particular shape? In this case, is round or oval fine, or does it need to be rectangle or square? What determines how deep the pot should be? Thanks for your advice in advance.
