I believe it is usually on material sourced from cuttings. I have had some amazing success in achieving uniform radial roots on species other than maple ( because i've never tried maple). I have some with a thick mat of roots already. The problem is it will be 10 years before these rooted sticks become anything like a bonsai. But with the roots they've got, i think it will be worth the wait.
