Joanie's right. Get permission before you dig. If it's on a heavily travelled hiking trail, yoiu will get alot of questions, possibly some hostility from hikers when they see you "defiling" their trail. Won't make any difference if the tree's done for. They won't care.

As for the tree's survival, it all depends on how much root you can get and the amount of damage to the main trunk...
