Yellow leaves on Chinese Elm

Does anyone know why? Here is some info:

-Planted in 75% pine bark/25% turface.
-Watered only when slightly damp
-Has been brought in garage for temps under 40F
-Just started showing yellow leaves about two and a half weeks ago,
during a time when the winter has been an average of 70F in day and
55F at night here in Houston.
-Added slow release fert pellets about a week ago. Yellow leaves have increased in number since then.

Any help appreciated.
