what do they mean when they said the lava rock is 'fine', 'medium' or 'coase'? I want soil size that's about 1/4" in size, which should I get?

I use their fine, it is in the soil size range that you want, and is very consistant in size, with little to no finer material. If you want to see it yourself they will send you samples of anything they sell at no charge. Also, they only have a 10 dollar minimum before shipping, which is very easy to reach. If that is a problem, what I do is make a combined order with friends who also do bonsai, as I seem to be the only nut in my group that does both bonsai and orchids  , and easily make the minimum.
