Looks like some reverse taper is the main defect. Looks like it might have been planted low in the soil for awhile.
If it were mine I would cut it back to the first branch on the right, and leave a stub to reduce the incidence of die back. After a month or so I would carve the stub and use it is a lever to pull the branch on the right more upright. Then I would plant it in a large box or put in in the ground for at least three years.
For the base, that reverse taper really detracts from the appearance of the bark. I would be tempted to wrap a galvanized steel wire pretty tightly around the base from bottom up to the first branch. Then I'd just let the tree grow into the wire. Once it had, I would wrap another wire in the opposite direction. This is pretty effective as you can see some of the results here if you search on "WIRE SCAR"
