A more economical, less labor intensive source could be (depending on your locality and local soil conditions) composted pine bark. The stuffis sold by the 25 lbs bag at Home depot under the name "nature's pride soil conditioner." It's used to thin out heavier clay soils and make them more amendable to landscape plants.
