Japanese Maple

Greetings.
I just purchased a Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) from Lowes for 14.00. It has a 1 1/2" trunk with good root spread, some interesting lower branches, a sparse area, and then a nice top. It is in a 2 1/2 gallon pot and stands about 3 feet. I am planning on doing an air layer and my questions are:

1. How long does this species take to develop roots?

2. Can I do it now?

3. Is it possible to do multiple air layers along the same trunk line?

4. Should I let it hang out in it's current pot or move to a grow box?

Thanks a bunch
mwb
