Not being a scientist I can't answer that but Mother Nature lets them grow well here much to the disbelief of many northerners. I pinch mine year round.

Why? I don't think I would like shoveling snow and scraping ice. Besides my wardrobe costs would increase dramatically. Today I'm trimming and re-potting two boxwoods, a Hokkaido elm and five Juniper Blaauws, the latter of which I recently received from Brent at Evergreen Gardenworks. It is currently 71 degrees and sunny. Although growth does slow down a bit this time of year there isn't really any down time so to speak. The Ficus are keeping me quite busy as well, they think it is spring time. My Dawn Redwood, Bald Cypress, Maples and Hackberry are the only ones that are completely dormant. I guess if I lived up north I would be reading more.
