I guess the main issue with this particular tree is the lack of taper. Your technique will definitely achieve a wonderful taper for the patient enthusiast (who said good bonsai happens overnight?). A shari or carving could compensate for the lack of taper and distract the viewer. A quicker option would be to purchase a tree with a better taper. BTW, $ 100 for this type of material sounds excessive IMO. I can find decent raw BC with a decent base in my local Home Depot for about $75.
