I have same problem here in da Bronx. They tor up all of my bonsais and actually taken them out of the pots.

The soap methood may work I havent tried that yet, its used in vinyards to shoo away deer and its the perfume in the soap that is the repelant fyi. you might want to try it if your only bonsai garden is your balcony.

What I have done is baught a Large rat cage in china town for $5. this catches them safely and then I take them a park a mile or two away and release them. so I do this on a weekly basis it seems and starting next week they will be getting a dunking in some pink or yellow dye so I can determine if there the same ones comming back.
