Mr. Masumi explained how to create taper and branches and trunks with a series of diagrams. The letters correspond to the illustration below.
A. (This is a view from a branch as seen from above) Explanation of how branches can be developed to have taper and branching (as described above) Branches can be cut back at various points to redirect the growth, resulting in movement and taper in the branches.
(Remaining are side views of growing trunks, or "elevations")
B. Planting a trunk at an angle and cutting back to a side branch is a good way to develop a shohin trunk
C. This is B before cutting. Let the trunk enlarge until it approaches the size of the "finished" shohin in caliper.
D. Growing the tree straight up isn't good. No taper or movement.
E. Repeated pruning can create an interesting shape, by combining taper with changes in trunk direction.
