It's a matter of principle. If the store managers let you negotiate with them for prices they think that maybe others will start to do it too. Like if you found out you could buy pots with dead trees in them for like $5, what's to stop you from killing all the trees to buy the pots for cheap. Also, you can't go to a store and tell them, "there's a spot on this apple, I want 50% off," they'd tell you to go back to produce select a good one and pay full price.
I think dumpster diving is illegal, petty theft if I recall. So, facetiously or not, it might land you in jail with the drunkies one night
