At the Ginkgo show this year I saw a fantastic Escallonia full of beautiful carved deadwood. The thing that worked so well for me was the mature brown tone of the wood, bleached white on this kind of deciduous tree would just be too harsh.

I have a trident that was carved last year, its weathered for I year and I want to achieve the same effect.

Any ideas as to what will give the deadwood protection and this rich brown tone?
