It's a hard call, Dean, because you need that rootball to absorb water. Do your best, and let us know if you have any more questions.
I would also be tempted to soak the rootball in water when repotting, to make sure it wets all the way through. Wait until you see all of the bubbles stop. At least that way you don't have a dry center. Just an opinion, take it with a grain of salt as always!
