Ok...I guess what I was looking for is called "slip pot"...

Take the entire rootball and bury it in new soil in a bigger pot...Take a chopstick
and gently bore a few holes in the top of the hard soil trying not to damage the roots. Hopefully the rootball will soften (not sure how) and expand (while in dormancy?). Oh well,I'll give it a try and see what happens.
