Potato chip man,

I am very new to bonsai and was fortunate enough to receive both volume 1 and 2 for my birthday (what a wonderfull wife!).

Though I have not read volume 2 completely, I agree that volume 1 seems to be more of an overview of bonsai with very practical information and volume 2 is more specific and includes advanced techniques that can make your trees great.

If money allows, I would recomend getting both books... If you are very new and looking for a primer and some very applicable advice get volume 1... If you have advanced more and understand the basics of soil preperation, horticulture, etc. then get volume 2 and learn more of the advanced techniques that are specific to bonsai.

I hope this helps,

Matt
