I don't know much about podocarpus. I'll be getting one soon, though!
It sounds like possible overwatering, though. Give it as much light as you can where it is. It should survive as an office dweller, as I had one as a houseplant for years.
overwatering is very easy to do, and can look like the plant dried up to the untrained eye, as the branches will shrivel and leaves drop just the same
