By the sounds of it your winter comes at the same time as mine. I took some willow cutting this time last year after reading a thread about willows. The ones i took were about 2cm across and i just pushed them into some very gravely soil and left them. I was slightly worried about how they would do. They were left unprotected all winter and didn't do much until late spring this year when they took off. More roots than i could shake a stick at and i've got some decent primary branches already. Willows are prety much indestructable, but do seem to randomly loose branches for no obvious reason.
