Uncommon Tools?

While sitting with my brother in law who is a recent convert to Bonsai I found myself answering questions as to what I used certain things for that were in my tool bag.

He was already familiar with the common tools such as concave cutters, wire cutters, shears, chopsticks and such but there were some items I had that he wasn't sure of the use intended.

I thought I'd share a few uncommon tools whose uses may be uncommon to newer converts to this art.

1) A common tool bag.

2) A common adjustable utility knife. Excellent for cutting down nursery pots, for air layering (Very sharp and sterile) and for grafting.

3) Utility knifes have many purposes, adjustable ones allow you to control cutting depth.

4) Toothbrushes have many uses in bonsai from polishing Juniper bark, removing moss and grime from trunks and nebari, to cleaning pots.

5) Aquarium hose is a life saver when using guy wires, it helps to prevent the wire from cutting into the bark.

6) Look closely and you'll see a wire passed through a short piece of aquarium hose protecting the bark on a trunk.
