Hi Byron and welcome to the forum.
If you take 5 minutes to fill out your user CP with relevant info such as location and USDA heat zone, people will be better able to offer you advice on suitable species.
There are quite a few Canadian members on the forum, so I am sure one of two will chime in with some info for you. Other than that, try looking at local trees and finding out their names and also suitability for bonsai culture.
