Yes, you could certainly do that in a leather state of the clay, or even with a fresh slab, but you would have to be fore-thinking enough to know exactly where and how placed, size, etc. of the pot you intend on building on the flip side.
or, you could punch some holes/channels in the clay and then make it up as you go!
