I still don't know how to link to another thread, and my computer savvy kids are asleep, but if you search the forum using the words "reputation points" you will find some posts about them where Matt explains them. (apparently as well as they CAN be explained, they are fairly complex)

The grey ones are possibly a negative from someone who doesn't have a very good accumulation of reputation themselves. The system takes into consideration the karma of people who are much more interested in tweaking people's noses than they are for rewarding people....so if they give you a negative, the Magic Rep Point Fairy swishes his rainbow wand and makes it grey. Or something like that. (Please correct this if it is wrong) I've had two greys and they were both apparently meant to be negatives but were, in the cosmic scheme of things, converted by Karma into neutrals.

A real, serious negative is bug-bite red. You'll know when you get one. It will itch a while. The remedy is not to think about it, don't scratch it, just pretend it didn't happen. But think twice when you wander into that part of the woods again!! (I'm not saying don't go there, mind you, just think about it really hard first.)
