I'm sure there are a mix of reasons. There are certainly book collectors involved. There is no other reason to explain why an issue of Bonsai Today Magazine #2 can sell for a couple hundred bucks.

Japanese Maples by Adams happens to be a good book, which could explain its popularity. I think these titles come up from time to time in the used section at Amazon.com or ***E-BAY***

I think that Dave DeGroot's handbook on design is very good. You can come by that one on the Weyerhauser site (see bonsaiTALK Links) or perhaps in the BCI Bookstore. John Naka's Bonsai Techniques 2 is really good for learning how to duplicate specific tree characteristics.
