Hi Link,

It seems that your questions are a little out of order..

.. get yourself a ficus .. plant it in the ground .. when the trunk is the size you desire .. chop the trunk to the desired height and grow new canopy..
then dig from the ground and place in pot. Over the next couple years defoliate at least once in early summer and the leaves will begin to reduce.
There are many varieties of ficus and available there in Page Ranking.
