Some one new to the thread's view. Why don't you place a wooded chop stick in the soil half way from the tree to the edge of the pot. Leave the chopstick in the soil, it should go fairly deep. Each day check the chopstik. If it is wet.... do not water! If it is dry ... you should have watered yesterday. If it is damp, going dry water it today. If you find you are watering every day. check the chopstick twice a day. When you water do as Matt says, water it till it runs out the bottom.
Don't forget.... you have just brought this guy home. It needs to adjust! It was probably getting better light at the nusery than you are giving it. I have heard these trees can grow inside. I have 5 Chinese Elms of different varieties, all of them are outside and much happier for it!
