I haven't found that Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) require anything special. I simply remove a ring of bark and proceed as usual. Supposedly the laceleaf cultivars are harder to layer, but I've had reasonable success in my limited attempts with these as well.

Acer shirasawanum `aureum' is another story. I've found this one to be more tempermental but (knock on wood) after two failed attempts, I am currently getting roots on a couple of layers I took this year before budbreak.
